Description

An exhilarating trek to the frozen Roopkund Lake in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Legend has it that this ‘Mystery Lake’ or ‘Skeletal Lake’ is surrounded and immersed with hundreds of human skeletons which is the major appeal of the lake. According to myths, these skeletons belonged to a group of pilgrims who were unprepared in a hailstorm and with no shelter in sight, succumbed to their own deaths. This trek takes one through deep forests, cascading brooks, lakes, verdant meadows and folklores. Moreover, get a chance to come across vast stretches of green pastures, called ‘Bugyals’ during the course of this trail. At the end of the steep climb to the summit is the pristine frozen water body of Roopkund from which one can marvel at the magnificent peaks of Trishul, Nandaghunti and Chaukhamba.

Religious Significance: Referred to as the Himalayan Kumbh, the great 'Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra' is held every 12 years from Nauti village near Karanprayag to Homkund near Roopkund. This yatra is dedicated to Goddess Nanda. A large number of people from Garhwal and Kumaon take part in this strenuous holy yatra.
